Mississippi, 1946. Sister Rosetta has changed the face of gospel music with her exuberant, electric guitar-playing style. Shunned by straitlaced church folk for performing in nightclubs and glorying in rhythm and blues, she’s persuaded the saintly young singer Marie to join her on a tour of the segregated southern States. But first she has to convert Marie’s pure Sunday sound into something that has just a little more swing…

Today’s trip will take us to the delightful Riverside town of Richmond Upon Thames, which has long been a favourite retreat for Royalty and the rich and famous, including King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I and King George III.      

Richmond boasts the longest stretch of the River Thames which runs for over 10 miles through the borough, linking Hampton Court Palace, Richmond Town Centre and Kew Gardens with London. There will be time before the matinee performance to have lunch and enjoy a riverside walk along the Thames .    

Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins separated at birth, who grow up on the opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences.

The Battle Proms picnic concert takes place in the Queen Elizabeth Oak Field in the leafy Hatfield Park. Legend has it that it was beneath one of the ancient oaks in this field that the young Queen Elizabeth I heard that she was to be Queen of England.
